RCSS Pastor Rev. Dr Simon Jooste gave two presentations at the Ratio Christi Conference in Cape Town on 3 August 2024.
The title of the first presentation is “God’s justice is not ‘social justice’: an apologetics perspective”. Social justice movements have swept the globe, leaving many Christians to believe that their goals and ethics are consistent with those of the Christian faith. In this presentation, Simon offers an intellectual defence of the Christian faith and values, demonstrating that societal justice is not commensurate with biblical justice. The title of the second presentation is “Embodied law and gospel: deconstructing unbelieving identity politics”. Identity politics is defined as a political or social activity by or on behalf of current or previously marginalised groups (i.e. racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, or gender groups) to rectify injustices suffered by group members because of misconceptions of their identity and/or conflicts between their particular identity and that of the dominant identity groups in society. In this presentation, Simon helps Christians better understand the concept of identity politics and offers guidance on responding to the unbelieving identity politics that has become a central tenant of society. Ratio Christi (Latin for “The reason of Christ”) is a grassroots movement encouraging and strengthening the faith of Christian students at universities around the world through rational investigation and apologetics while sharing Christ’s message and love to those who have yet to receive it.
