AM liturgy

:: Call to worship/ Call on God’s name for help by reading: Psalm 97

And praying:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we call your name, praying that you would be pleased to turn away from our many terrible sins, by which we have never stopped deserving your anger. And because we are not worthy to appear before your sovereign majesty, we pray that you will see us in your beloved Son Jesus Christ, and accept the merit of his death in satisfaction for all our offenses, and that in him we may be pleasing in your eyes. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, enlightening our minds with true understanding of your word. And give us your grace, so that as we can receive your truth into our hearts with humility and awe.  Please lead us to place all our trust in you.  Please enable us to live to serve and worship you, to the glory of your holy name. And since you have chosen to count us among your people, help us to give you the love and honor that we owe to you, as children to our Father, and as servants to our Lord. (adapted from Calvin)

:: Song of Praise: Psalm 103 (p103A) (text here and tune here)

:: Corporate confession of Faith: Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He endured the sufferings of hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

*The word “catholic” refers not to the Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

:: Sing: Doxology – Gloria Patri (Tune: here)

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.

:: Congregational prayer

Blessed you are, most gracious Father! for having prepared for us an eternal kingdom, a heavenly city, a new Jerusalem. As our Lord Jesus has taught us, we pray for the coming of that Kingdom.

Father, we pray for the Church, that she might in truth be the New Jerusalem, prepared as a Bride, adorned for her husband. Give to her true purity, that she might be without spot or wrinkle. Give her the grace of hope and the confidence of joy, as she awaits the coming of the Bridegroom. We pray for our own congregation. Grant that it might be a sign here on earth of the Church that is above. Blessed you are, O Father, for your faithfulness to the Church.

 Father, we pray for those who lead our Church, for pastors, for elders, for deacons, Fill them with the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord. Blessed you are, O Father, for your faithfulness to your servants!

Father, whose love and concern is for a world filled with a great variety of people, we pray for people in different lands, for Mexicans and Brazilians and Colombians, for Watusi, Masai, Ibu, and all the tribes of Africa, for all peoples in China, Malaysia, and Indonesia, for French people and English people, Greeks and Russians. Grant that the gospel might be heard in all the corners of the earth. Blessed you are, O Father, for you have opened up your Kingdom to all peoples!

Father, we pray for those who lead our nation. Anoint them with the gifts of your Spirit, honesty, fairness, and intelligence, love of peace and learning. Blessed you are, O Father, for you have specially blessed our land!

Father and Shepherd of the flock of your people, we pray for the members of our congregation, for husbands and wives, that their love for each other might be ever richer and kinder, for children and young people, that they might grow in every good direction, for people who live alone, that they might find friendship and community, for grandparents and elderly friends, that they might have that radiance which belongs to older years. (H.O. Old)
